Fernando Mastrangelo
Fernando Mastrangelo (born 13 October 1978) is a Brooklyn-based contemporary artist. He received his M.F.A. in Sculpture from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA (2004), his B.F.A. from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle (2002) and attended the Pilchuck Glass School (2001). Mastrangelo became notable in the press for his use of controversial materials as in the case of "Felix", a sculpture made from cocaine 〔(Narcotic Art ) New York Post, March 2009〕 and "La Salvamara", a series using the cremated ashes from the MS 13 Gang.〔Katy Donoghue, (“Thinning the Herd” ), Whitewall Magazine, Dec. 2009〕 In 2010, he gave a Ted Talk on the nature of art in the era of social networking, detailing the creative process behind "Al One" his collaboration with Napster founder Shawn Fanning.〔(TedxSoma ) Sep 08〕 Mastrangelo is founder of a design firm, MMATERIAL, that runs out of his Brooklyn studio. Additionally he is represented by Mike Weiss Gallery, New York, New York.
==Artistic Practice==

Fernando Mastrangelo uses materials for their aesthetic and historical senses and for their power to signify. His works ignore any bias regarding criss-crossing design and fine art as well as commodity and aesthetic functions. Mastrangelo uses pure form and symbolic meaning to transform commodity goods into sculptures, functional objects, and wall-hanging pieces referencing art and social histories as well as the seductive ideas of sacred geometry. With materials such as salt, coffee, sand, and cement, the artist expands our experience of everyday materials, granting them an otherwise unnoticed cutting-edge, sophisticated minimalism. The works are intriguingly contradictory – being both rugged and refined, durable and delicate – yet without fail, they achieve harmony through Mastrangelo’s painstakingly precise production. Fernando Mastrangelo has exhibited extensively throughout the US and internationally in both group and solo shows. In 2008 the Brooklyn Museum acquired Mastrangelo’s work, then included it in the critically acclaimed exhibition Connecting Cultures in 2012. He has been featured in publications such as the Wall Street Journal, Modern Painters, Interview Magazine, Whitewall Magazine, Flaunt Magazine, and Cultured Magazine, where he is a contributing editor, among many others. Additionally Mastrangelo is the founder of a design firm, MMaterial that runs out of his Brooklyn studio.
